A curiosity: Michelangeli wood carving

A curiosity: Michelangeli’s wood carvings

On our visit to Casa Vissani for the one hour lunch, (see http:// ianmcbride60.wordpress.com) I noticed the beautiful wood carvings immediately- trees, faces, decorations etc.

I had seen them in Orvieto near the Torre Moro and inside the Caffè Montanucci (Corso Cavour) in Orvieto (where you can eat an outstanding tavola calda) as well as admire these evocative animals, people and tree sculptures.  Fortunately Roberto, the waiter at Vissani was able to give some background about these wonderful three dimensional wood carvings: they were done by Gualviero Michelangeli, a famous Orvieto artist. The Michelangeli family have been furniture makers since the 18th century. Since Gualviera died the tradition has been continued by his daughters Donatella, Raffaela and Simonetta who also make puppets, dolls etc in their shop located in Via Michelangeli, Orvieto. Definitely worth a look.

Should we expect to see carved rooster suspended from the ceiling at Soriano?
